Dear Kildare Families
What an incredible 2021 Term 1 with our focus on our Core Value of Wonder - celebrating all that is good with joy and gratitude. This term has certainly been filled with many wonderful experiences and celebrations for our College community. Each day, your daughters lead and teach us in so many different ways. It is an absolute joy to watch them develop new skills and gain confidence with all that they are doing
Agents of Change
Recently I attended the International Women’s Day Breakfast with our Year 12 Student Leaders who represented us among other girls’ schools in Adelaide. We were honoured to hear very powerful presentations from Senator Penny Wong and former Senator, Natasha Stott Despoja. Both women spoke passionately about calling out wrong and disrespectful behaviour. They highlighted that we need to continue to empower women so that they have a voice, feel safe and able to forge their own path without gender barriers.
Also, last week at our assembly, there was a special focus on racism. Our students stood up, educated and shared deeply personal experiences that genuinely affected us all - it demonstrated great courage and bravery. I will never forget this assembly for the way our students spoke and for the way our students listened.
At Kildare, our respectful relationships programs across each level, continuously reinforces the messages of mutual respect, trust, good communication, understanding and honesty. In partnership with you, our families, we encourage you to speak about this with your daughter, supporting her to be upstanding, to use her voice confidently and courageously to speak up and to speak out. These conversations are important – in our College, in our homes and our communities, so that collectively, we can drive great change in our world for young women.
Innovation Hub
We have been busy behind the scenes finalising the plans for the Innovation Hub. We are just waiting for some final approvals before we share the plans with everyone. We are super excited about this project as it will provide your daughter with many further opportunities at Kildare.
Arkaroola
We are also delighted to announce that students in Years 11 and 12 Physics have the opportunity to attend the first ever ‘Astrophysics’ trip to Arkaroola. We would like to especially thank Dr Kristin Weidenbach and Lila Weidenbach (present Kildare family) for extending a welcome for Kildare College to visit Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary (AWS). Also, Doug Sprigg and Vicki-Lee Wilson for their support and hosting Kildare staff at AWS on reconnaissance visits and numerous meetings with staff both at Kildare and at the site to discuss logistics and ensuring the educational activities will be world class and our students will be well accommodated.
This is an incredible opportunity for our students, as they will be undertaking activities that will allow them to explore the awe and wonder of the universe. They will be staying at the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary which has the lowest light pollution in the world. https://www.arkaroola.com.au/
During the trip, our students will:
- Use industry-standard telescopes to view the elemental configurations of stars
- Investige the chemical make-up of minerals using UV spectroscopy
- Work through their SACE Completion Practical
- Participate on a ridge-top tour to look at significant geological formations
- Enjoy the experience of outback Australia in a safe and friendly environment.
We are also very fortunate to have obtained sponsorship from Heathgate Resources, which means that there will be no cost to students. The dates for the trip are Monday 12 April to Thursday 15 April 2021, the first week of the April school holidays.
Our Fence
You may have noticed that our fence has come to a standstill as some of the materials are currently unavailable. There was a suggestion from the fence company to improvise with something else to keep the project moving, however, we declined this offer, as we would like everything to match – this means we have to wait for a few more weeks for it to be completed. Thank you for your patience.
