Year 10 ‘Street Smart High’

25.10.21

The Year 10 cohort attended the RAA ‘Street Smart High’ Road Safety Program hosted at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre learning about road safety education to develop and enhance their positive road safety attitudes and behaviors.

The program included a number of speakers giving accounts of how their lives and or their families' lives had been impacted as a result of dangerous driving. Students also heard from the South Australian Police Officers, Paramedic Doctors, SA Ambulance Paramedics, Road Safety Researchers, a SA Metropolitan Fire Officer, a Psychologist, and many other professionals.

Students were exposed to a crash scene that role played and dissected the elements that led to the crash and the impacts it had/has on various individuals who face various life changing consequences. Furthermore, through a driving simulation, students learned about distractions that limit drivers’ attention, especially amongst young people. Students also learned about what makes a car safe and the features they should explore when purchasing their first car.

The event educated students about the risks associated with driving and being a passenger as well. It challenged students to be resilient and show resilience to avoid dangerous situations, challenging students to speak up (addressing the Elephant in the room) when they witness friends and family involved in risk or dangerous situations.
