It has been a busy Term 2 so far in the Resource Centre with lots of reading, borrowing, and fun lunchtime activities. Our Year 7 and 8 HUMS classes have enjoyed coming to the Resource Centre for weekly lessons where they can borrow new books and work their way to completing their 12 novels for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. It is such a wonderful way for the students to broaden their reading horizons, and improve their literacy and vocabulary skills.
There is always something exciting happening at lunchtime in the Resource Centre. This month is Mindful in May so we have had a special focus on Mindfulness colouring in and Origami. It has been a great chance for the students to socialise over a calm and mindful activity. Last week the students had lots of fun making Mother’s Day cards for someone special in their lives.
As I am new to the role as Resource Centre Officer this year, we have focused on building a graphic novel and manga collection for the students as it is such a growing area of interest for them. Graphic novels are visually appealing and multimodal texts that require multiple literacies to understand them such as linguistic, visual, gestural, spatial and symbolic. Building this collection has tied in wonderfully with our weekly Anime Club that meets every Friday lunchtime. Students enjoy discussing their favourite anime and manga, colouring in their favourite characters, and drawing their own creations. It has been a great way for them to learn about Japanese culture and meet new friends with similar interests.
Please look forward to another great term with lots of fun activities in the Resource Centre!
Happy Reading,
Emma Gay
Resource Centre Officer
