In September 2020, the South Australian Sport Institute (SASI) conducted their talent search at a number of high schools. Kildare College students, Lorelai Smith and Madeleine Corner were identified for sprint kayaking. SASI was looking for the best potential talent for sprint kayak with the ultimate goal of finding future Olympic gold medallists. The key components that contribute to making the kayak move fast are strength, speed, endurance, arm length, and sitting height. Both Lorelai and Madeleine performed extremely well or were exceptional in one or more tests. Due to their successful results across Stage 1 and 2 of the testing they were selected into the sprint kayaking squad.
Lorelai and Madeleine have competed in several regattas since commencing their kayaking journey. On 8 March 2021 both students had the opportunity to participate in the U/16 State Titles resulting in Lorelai receiving three bronze medals for K1-200m, K1-500m, and K1-1000m.
Congratulation to both students on their kayaking success.
