News from the Middle Years

The transition into any new school is a time of mixed emotions, not only for students, but also for parents. To help make this transition process as smooth as possible, there are many things we can do to support each other.

Setting up good routines from the start of the year is important. These can include: organising a specific spot to drop off and meet your daughter each day and setting up a specific area at home so she can complete her homework.

Talk with your daughter about her day, listen and encourage her to think positively about her experiences. Reassure her that it is okay to feel nervous about making new friends and encourage her to be open to this and approach each new encounter with kindness.

For parents, talking with your daughter is a good way to help deal with some of the emotions you may be feeling. Making connections with your daughter’s Pastoral Care Teacher and other families at the school is also important. Our Connection Evening in Week 4 is a great way to make the next step in building connections within our community.

If you would like more information about supporting your daughter through her transition into secondary school, please feel free to contact her Pastoral Care Teacher, House Leader or myself. You can also find some excellent resources on the Australian Parenting Website, and specific information on transitioning into high school can be found at: https://raisingchildren.net.au/pre-teens/school-education/school-choosing-starting-moving/starting-secondary-school.
